We define a “local hero” as someone whose business offers high-quality local products and maintains high standards in social and environmental practices, food sourcing, regional economic impact and commitment to promoting a sustainable food system. Andrea Wells, founder of Wells Made Co., uses all-natural, organic ingredients and sustainable jars to make a line of premium handmade butters: pumpkin seed, cashew black pepper, hazelnut espresso, sesame seed, hemp seed, almond and macadamia hazelnut with coconut. Full of protein with no added sugar or salt. The butters can be found at various local farmers markets, Rainbow Blossom locations, Lucky’s Market and online.

Farmer Fred Holden of Holden Family Farm has been growing garlic in northeast Jefferson County along Floyd’s Fork for over 20 years. He and co-farmer Amara McCarthy strive to improve soil health while producing crops without fertilizers, insecticides or other pesticides. Their fruits, vegetables, garlic, herbs and cut flowers are found at Douglass Loop Farmers’ Market and restaurants Gralehaus and Holy Grale, Harvest, Lilly’s Bistro, Mayan Café, Seviche, Wiltshire on Market, Red Hog and Another Place Sandwich Shop. Amara has a small CSA.
