Nanz & Kraft Florists

At Nanz & Kraft Florists, we were helping Kentuckians “shop local” before shopping local was in fashion. In fact, 2020 marks our 170th anniversary as a customer- focused, family owned business. For those keeping score, that’s 25 years before the first Kentucky Derby.

Our founder, Henry Nanz, left his native Germany for the U.S. in the mid-19th century. As a trained horticulturist, Nanz naturally opened a florist business in Louisville after settling there in 1850. Small at first, like most new businesses, demand for flowers grew right alongside the growth of Louisville itself.

And so Nanz, along with then-partner, Carl Neuner, continued to expand the business from a simple greenhouse to a 30-acre, 60-greenhouse operation.

That was 1880. And in 1895, Henry Nanz, Jr. took over the business — and took on a new partner: Henry A. Kraft. But it wasn’t until 1958 that the company assumed the name it still has today – Nanz & Kraft Florists. Since then, the business has passed down through the Kraft family, and has continued to grow. The 20,000-squarefoot store on Breckenridge in St. Matthews that you visit today was opened in 1976.

Today, remaining true to the spirit of our founder, Nanz & Kraft Florists continues to grow and evolve, using the latest technology to make ordering and deliveries more efficient. And we continue to expand and grow our offerings, in service to changing customer needs. Of course, we offer the freshest and most beautiful cut flowers and arrangements, along with house plants and seasonal plants. But you’ll also find home décor, gift baskets, gourmet foods, candles, candies and — most recently — wine and spirits.
