In 1977, Rob and Pumpkin Auerbach established Louisville’s original health food store with the hope of bringing vegetarian food to an area that wasn’t exactly a hotspot of the natural foods movement. Rob and Pumpkin opened their first location, which was more of a cafeteria that also sold the ingredients that were used in their recipes—bulk items, produce and from-scratch treats.

43 years later, Rainbow Blossom is proud to be celebrating four decades as a family owned and operated business in Louisville.

The dedication to bringing good food to the community continues with Rob and Pumpkin’s daughter Summer Auerbach, who manages Rainbow Blossom’s four market locations (in Kentucky and Indiana) and wellness center— and she’s keeping true to the company’s roots while helping it grow.

Today, Rainbow Blossom is a place customers go for healthy food, fresh organic local produce, specialty foods, supplements and a knowledgeable staff. Unique product selection has always been key to Rainbow Blossoms success. “We did a customer survey this past year every time we ask why people shop with us, 80 percent said it’s because of the unique product selection they can’t find anywhere else,” says Summer Auerbach. “So it really feels like that’s a core piece of our identity. We feel this makes us more nimble and lets us work with local farmers.

If a farmer comes in and says, “Hey, I have 36 bunches of kale,” we can buy them. It’s meaningful for the farmer and meaningful for us!”
