A community-supported agriculture (CSA) harvest subscription program is a way for consumers to buy local, seasonal produce, meats and goods directly from a farmer. Subscribers are considered shareholders and prepay for a “share” of the farmer’s goods for a period of time, generally one delivery per week for 14 to 20 or more weeks. Costs vary, depending on size, products and the number of deliveries. Shares are typically delivered to a pickup site, and CSA farms often have special opportunities for on-farm activities, weekly newsletters and recipes.

There are many types of CSA sizes and offerings. Because members prepay for shares, CSAs offer stability for farmers and allows them to plan crops and respond to unexpected weather conditions, if needed. The shared risk between member and farmer is what creates a sense of community and a stronger connection to the farm.

During this time of year subscriptions are filling up quickly so be sure to do your research and find the CSA that works well for you. Here is some practical advice as a CSA subscriber:

Respect your farmer and pickup spot: Map out the pickup location in advance and treat the pickup site like your home. Often sites are private driveways so be sure to avoid driving on grass, blocking the driveway, double parking or littering. If you can’t pick up, send a friend or relative in your place.

Bring your own bags: Some CSAs pack shares in returnable bags/boxes; others allow shareholders to select their own items so it is good practice to bring reusable bags.

Get to know your farmer: Make sure both all parties have the correct contact information to receive weekly emails with lots of valuable information, and sometimes recipes. Feel free to ask questions!

Be prepared for abundance: At the beginning of your first CSA season, you may be overwhelmed with the bounty of your share. Look forward to quantities and varieties of produce that may be new to you.

The CSAs listed here support Edible Kentucky & Southern Indiana. If your CSA would like to be included in next year’s listing, email ann@ediblekentucky.com
