NEW PROGRAM FOR SELECTING SEAFOOD

Local restaurants and chefs have partnered with the James Beard Foundation on Smart Catch, an initiative to make sourcing sustainable seafood easier and more accessible for chefs. The program helps culinary professionals understand the best way to choose sustainable seafood options and leaving certain species off the menu. With more than 90% of the world’s fisheries either fully fished or overfished, preserving marine life to assure stable fishing stocks and promoting sustainably farmed options is more important than ever. The Smart Catch program provides training and support to chefs so they can serve seafood fished or farmed in environmentally responsible ways.

STINKY NEIGHBORS? THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT

Smell MyCity is a smartphone app designed to crowdsource reports of pollution odors traveling through the Louisville community.

All smell reports submitted through the app are visible on a map, and information is publicly available through SmellMyCity.org. Through the app, residents can rank the smell from one to five, describe the smell, list symptoms and add comments. Then, they can look at a map of other reports, all anonymous, with dates, time and locations. Every time someone files an odor report, the app sends an email to the Louisville Metro Air Pollution Control District (APCD).

The app is available for both Android and iPhone.

BUYER BEWARE WHEN SHOPPING FOR CBD

CBD has become one of the fastest-growing markets with hundreds of companies eager to bring CBD products to market. But more doesn’t always mean better and not all CBD products are created equal, so it is important for consumers to be savvy when exploring products. Here’s a step-by-step guide of factors to consider when shopping for a CBD product:

Note: As with any health supplement, consult with your health care provider first.

Decide Why You Want to Use CBD, and in What Form

CBD is being touted for numerous possible health benefits—and some preliminary research suggests it might help with everything from pain and anxiety to multiple sclerosis and opioid addiction. For now, according to the Epilepsy Foundation, it’s been proven to help treat only two rare, but devastating, forms of epilepsy.

Buy Local

Beyond the benefit of supporting the local economy, buying locally allows for better transparency and in-person consultation about the product.

Know Ingredients

Research the company and product. Learn the extraction method and know the ingredients, understanding the role each ingredient plays in the product.

Ask About Third-Party Testing and Lab Reports

As much as possible, stick with products that have been submitted for third-party testing. It’s one way to make sure that they are pure, safe and high quality.

Products that Make Sweeping Health Claims

Making health claims is legal only for prescription drugs, which undergo extensive testing for effectiveness and safety. The more dramatic the claim, such as the ability to cure cancer or heart disease, the more skeptical you should be.

Price Matters

If a CBD product is really cheap, think twice before buying it. The cost of growing organically, extraction and testing is costly but important to ensure quality.
